How easy is it to get fired at your company?

I know some companies like Google and Microsoft are supposed to be 'won't fire ever' whereas Facebook and Uber are fire-happy. Is this perception true? Where does your company land in this firing scale?

I'll start, Netflix is at the fire-happy end of spectrum. I think we created that end 😂

Roughly 10% per year are sacrificed to the stack ranking gods. It has nothing to do with goals or skills and is 100% based on if your manager likes you. It’s a laughable amount of nepotism.

Not true about Microsoft .. atleast not anymore. Although firing someone is a 1yr long process during which the person is given support and opportunities to improve.

Tumblr won't fire you unless you harm somebody. You don't even need to work it seems.

It's fairly easy here. If your manager doesn't like you it's easy to have someone removed.

Amazon isn't as bad as Netflix, but it sure is trying.

Relatively so - you are given a chance to meet the bar and provided support, BUT once you are no longer believed to be able to meet it in a reasonable time you are quickly out

It's easy to get fired anywhere. Just bring in a handgun and wave it around.

Sadly this does not happen. Instead we have incompetent programmers doing the needful and treating the code repository like a septic tank. And that is rarely a firing offense. Literally takes years to get someone cheap removed for even blatant levels of incompetence.

Microsoft and Google fire people. They have to go through a process, but it's not hard.

Getting fired as an individual is nearly impossible at Boeing. Large layoffs happen though, especially in the Seattle area. The company likes to move those jobs to cheap, undesirable regions like Oklahoma City and St. Louis to save money. They ask people to reapply for their own jobs in the new city for less pay. Seattle area is unionized too so they like to move jobs to nonunion sites.

Do they offer relocation? What if you bought a house in Seattle?
      Mar 6

No relo unless you’re a mid to upper tier manager. It seems like in these cases many people just choose to take the layoff. Either that or they rent/sell their home in the Seattle area, usually at a big profit.

That being said Boeing is doing really well at the moment and I see no layoffs on the horizon for a while. Who knows though.

Hard. Once youre 'in', youre in. People get laid off at Amex and show back up as contractors all the time. Lot of 25 year tenure on my team.

Firing/Layoff is a wonderful thing to happen. It’s good for the employer and for the employee. For the latter because it gives them a chance to reboot something which was obviously not working .
Problem is only for the people on visa - they get messed up

Firings are not commonplace here but there will be big layoffs from time to time when the company decides to change direction. Naturally the decision makers are like a dozen layers of management away from the action, so I'm sure you can guess how merit based it is. This also leads to pockets of incompetence building up because it's very easy for information to get lost in the chain of command
