For new grads, I think they put you on a random ass team which can most of the time be something related to internal tools or ads. How hard would it be to move to something that’s popular like Instagram or messenger app teams at FB within your first year there? What about YouTube, maps, or Drive at google?
Quite easy, actually. Work at Google now, previously FB. Also was an intern @ both years before that as well. In all capacities I’ve worked, never found it difficult to switch teams to one of the more well-known products, or to work on interesting stuff on said teams. One thing to remember: ppl on messenger are dicks.
At FB, you choose a team during bootcamp, they don't assign you to one.
What are the chances that the team you choose has headcount/wants you? Especially the more popular ones? And do you have to leetcode for the team you want?
The teams with headcount give sales pitches to bootcampers. There's no extra interview, you've already been hired by that point.
If you don’t care the specific team within a product, it’s easy. YouTube, map or drive are all very huge with lots of HC. But the coolest teams within them are always picky.
Hard at FB but again depends on what your target team is

So hard being a women in tech industry
Inversely proportional to how sexy the team is perceived to be, unless you have specialist background in the subject.
So I assume it’s hard to get into the popular teams and you’d be stuck doing stuff that no one cares about?
That’s likely, but you might always get lucky.
