Have ~4 yrs of exp. Recently got an e4 offer from fb. Couldn't nudge it up to e5. Wondering statistically speaking, how fast can e4 be promoted to e5, assuming >= average performance? I heard fb has a max time limit on e4 -> e5 promo - if you cant make it in X yrs, you are fired kind of thing. What is X?
I moved from e3 to e5 in a little over 2 years out of college. They promote high performers fast.
People coming from Microsoft are a different group. Exceeding expectations at Microsoft is barely meeting expectations at FB.
Do u mind to explain how the performance is evaluated? Number of lines of code? Product you built? Or number of features? And how do you become a high performer? Thanks!
You are not fired after X months, but your performance will be evaluated as an E5. If performance is OK it should be a promo, unless you have a bad manager.
I got top bonuses at Microsoft and was promoted every year. At Facebook, I’m barely meeting expectations as an E4. I’ve been here 1.5 years. Still definitely worth it to GTFO of Microsoft.
Crap! Why? I am considering them.. I am an average performer at MSFT?
Microsoft is very top down. Someone above you tells you what to do and you do it. Facebook is very much bottom up. You have to figure it what to do and make sure it’s the right thing. If you execute well but work on the wrong things, that’s not good. Combine that with a younger skew and you have lots of people working long hours because they want a promo or have nothing else to do. When half of the company is working long hours, expectations rise.
My wife joined FB as 4 and promoted to 6 in 4 half’s (2 years) and switch role to M1 on the 5th half. She promoted someone in her team from 4 to 5 in his first half (9 month after joining). So yes if you are performing at next level and your team has high impact, super fast promotion is possible in FB.
How can we tell which team has high impact?
