How hard or easy is it to move to Redmond or Seattle from IDC Hyderbad at Microsoft for L62, IDC vs MSIT, in 2019.

Was just curious.

Do they demote you on transfer?

SAP dppd OP Jan 9, 2019

How possible?

No one can guarantee it, not even the recruiter

Microsoft Olof Jan 9, 2019

Recruiters always say that. But reality is different!

To move to Redmond there are a few things: 1. You should be minimum at L62 in IDC, no such restrictions in MSIT 2. You should have stayed for at least a year. Preferably two. 3. You should've been a strong performer. Most managers ask for your connect aka performance reviews even before starting the interview loop. You should have strong feedback 4. You'll go through the interview loop of 3-4 rounds and you should clear the rounds. 5. Out of a fifty roles you apply to, you could get called for two or three. That's the trend I saw anyway

And do these people apply on the careers portal or directly contact the Managers of the team they're applying for

Microsoft alic Jan 11, 2019

You apply via careers portal. You can informally talk to the manager as well but the general process is to apply via career portal.

What are the odds like in reality, what percentage of the total org applies for these and how many of them end up getting those eventually?

Microsoft alic Jan 12, 2019

Dude, I don't have the exact numbers on how many people apply. What I can tell for sure is that you have to apply to at least 10 positions and be patient to get a call. Also if your connects are bad then forget about it. Not a single manager would be interested. So in short - 1. Perform well 2. Wait a year 3. Be patient Sometimes if you have a good rapport with your manager they themselves help you move to a sister team. I've seen this happen so frequently it's insane

This is how I look at it, once u satisfy minimum required criteria I.e level 62 and min 1 year (that's legal req for L1 visa), moving can be very easy if ur team has a presence in US and u have been working with them. They might still take interview but if they knw u it is typically a formality. Now, other scenario is u don't have a team in US. In that case, process would be like changing jobs, interview difficult would be similar to what u faced when joining Microsoft. Only hurdle in this case is finding a team who is willing to get an international hire (since it is expensive for teams), however it is very common to find such teams Btw if u want data on how common it is, most important data point is, it was so common that whole level 62 requirement was created few years back. Before that anyone was allowed to move no matter what level they were on.
