I want to apply to a position at Amazon (essentially the competitor product to mine in Azure) and have multiple friends who are SDE2 level engineers at Amazon. None of them work on this product nor do I think they know the HM for the role. So my question is... should I ask them to refer me? Will it actually strengthen my (admittedly, already strong) application? Thanks.
It can be extremely helpful or not helpful at all depending on the context. If the referrer has good reputation and rockstar, and you have similar background, that can have positive impact even on your onsite and total comp. Seen this!
Extremely helpful at getting an initial phone screening with Apple that went on to three more rounds of interviews.
In my case, I can't imagine them not interviewing someone who has spent years on their competitors product, designing key features.
It will strengthen your application, there’s no downside, you should do it. Also the person who refers you gets a cash bonus (at no cost to you) if you get the job, so you’ll be doing them a favour.

It helps only in accelerating in getting the first phone screen. Assuming you have a good resume, that is never a problem. So, not much overall at L5 level.
Yeah that's what I assumed. But people have told me they matter a lot for Google. At Microsoft they only matter if your person actually knows the HM
0$ you gonna refer me then? What about you fjdj
