At my first job, I got into a backened only role, which I really appreciate. As I look to other companies though, it seems like more and more teams want only full stack engineers. Personally, I despise UI work, and have never worked on it professionally, so I’m not sure I can just pick it up like a new language. I wonder if this is a trend, in which case i should start developing my skills to prepare for the next hop.
Frontend isn’t just “UI work”. I used to have a similar mindset as yours. Don’t limit yourself ever. Do whatever it takes to ship a usable product
Zero importance, just do one thing and do it better. Full stack is of Startups and not so matured small/mid size company’s hiring fantasy but it is useless.
Like other said, usually big companies don’t have fullstack positions. That being said, startup, unicorns and established companies do a lot. I actually wish I have a fullstack skill to make my startup app....
It’s a personal preference. As Uber guy above said end goal is to ship a usable product whatever it takes. If you are in such environment it is good to know full stack. If you are in larger companies within teams with set line of work then it might not be required.
I would say it’s valuable, not necessarily important.
Is pay different for the two at different cimpanies
I think full stack is mostly a junior or mid level title. Its rare to find a senior full stack who knows just as much as a fully specialized senior backend or frontend
Usually every full stack guy/girl has be or fe stronger than the other which is equivalent of any specialized individual. Knowing something could vary depending on needs of the team and product.
In companies like Amazon, I don't see the word Full stack developer
Honest truth - full stack developer title is hoax, seldomly exists at big companies. You either keep doing backend or frontend, specially when you are new to industry cz there is so much to learn. Also, why do something you despise? Backend is good enough for career, specially distributed systems
