Do you ever see any QA guys PIPed? If yes, for what reasons? I am going to interview soon, but the PIP posts here hold me back. TC - 200K. I am on visa so worry about PIP, as I do not want to be out of status.
Is QAE just a nicer way to say QA, who is usually based in India to do product testing?
Shut up undisclosed company
Well that is what the JD says and I see a lot of these roles in Sunnyvale and Seattle.
Amazon is phasing out QA, just like Microsoft. Unless you plan to switch to SDET role after joining, it is not a good time to be a QAE at Amazon.
Well thats a bummer. Yes I can code, but I will never be able to compete with the existing SDETs ever. Why are they even hiring so many QAEs, if they plan to shutdown the role. I frequently get contacted by some recruiters, so thought of giving a try this time.
What separates QA from SDET? Real question, I'm unfamiliar with the distinctions.
QA, SDET, Test roles in general are being cut thick and fast time to sink or swim (code)
Thanks for the advice. Agree with what you say. Yes I can code, but I am sure I can never reach to the level of SDEs who have been coding right from the start of their career. I’ll be a very bad SDE.
Op, I started as a mechanical engineer so nothing is impossible. You just need to have the desire to do it.
I wished they PIP’d more QAE’s. I’ve worked with so many that needed you to hold their hand to complete a task. Couldn’t think for themselves.
Oh ok. Well if QAEs job is only to test the product manually, that should be an easy task for them. Are you speaking about their coding skills that they needed help in? I am just trying to understand what exactly QAEs do in Amazon when they already have SDETs
I expect someone that is testing a feature and is responsible for it to understand the feature and know what they are testing. It’s fine to ask questions, about implementation for example, but do some reading on your own. Dive deep. Take ownership. And so on.
Anyone in Amzn can get piped.
I am surprised QAE in Amazon do manual testing. Who does manual testing these days anyway. But I agree SDET is more coding heavy than QAE which is more domain heavy. If you are good at your domain, learn C/C++ or Java to get in quick. But the problem is learning C/C++ is not even remotely quick.
Look no further. All old style large companies have tons of people on H1Bs doing manual testing. Intel, Cisco, Qcom, Ericsson to name a few. These folks are often targetted during layoffs, but somehow survive .
The companies you mention are HW companies. There is still a lot manual HW test requirement because that is how you debug hardware. Else if you are talking manual SW test, that has been outsourced already or is not desired.
YOE?
