It's like working for the government I would imagine...
I back this up too.. It feels so aint it ?
Never worked for Boeing....but I talked to 2 employees before..... And I didn't like them lol.
Depends on the project your coming from that will determine your perception. You will have to overcome some stigma, however in tech if you got the chops you got the chops.
Was at Raytheon before getting into Tech. It was tough for anyone to take the slow pace of defense seriously. Ended up taking a 2 month contract job to start and convert to full time to prove I could handle Tech pace. Boeing may have the same obstacles...
People that cut their teeth on 787 like me are very different from those who have had their spirit beaten to a uniform grey dust by the 737, 747, 767, and 777. Young employees who have had a taste of the slow blue machine will be itching to find a place with agility and ability to change quickly in response to the needs of the business and arent hampered by needless self imposed processes that date back to the 60s and 70s and earlier.
Right, because 787 program went smoothly with no cost overrun lol
That's pretty irrelevant regarding culture. 787 might have had a bad run, but at least they have a MES system that can provide actionable data analysis to make improvements. 787 projected 1000 airplanes before turning a profit, but they recovered in half the time and were profitable at 500th or ealier. Thats pretty amazing.
I'm friends with a few recruiters and hiring managers in the Seattle area and they generally avoid Boeing employees like the plague - especially if they've been with the company more than 5 years. As others have mentioned, they see Boeing employees as slow and lazy. If you want to leave Boeing, definitely take advantage of your professional network to get your foot in the door for an interview!
Older, slow, not really able to keep up with the pace at other companies, tend to be behind on skills. Sorry dude.
Nah thanks for the honesty. Sad but the truth
It might be a tad harder to get interviews, but having a good network and working the system gets past that. Once you get an interview, no one gives a damn if your a CTO, a coaster, from Boeing or from Google, they will just throw you at the white board and have you solve random tech questions. If you have time to talk otherwise consider it a bonus. So the key is, just study the bejesus out of Leetcode.
My team recently hired a Boeing eng for some low level work and he is great- general impressions of Boeing is older and sometimes coasters but if you weed them out there are some good ones. Btw I don't always think older=coasters but when it comes to Boeing I've seen this more often than not. It seem like Boeing just doesn't attract college hires or younger eng folks due to culture - I heard you can't wear shorts and tshirts?
I wear shorts when I want to, even a few managers wear shorts on Fridays. The company is slowly moving away from the traditional views, but not fast enough for my tastes.
T-shirt? Rare but possible. Short is unthinkable in the factory
