How is Microsoft able to attract/retain the talent?

The levels.fyi data shows a significant gap with other big tech. Assuming that MSFT hiring bar is also high / tech employees are of good quality, how is MSFT able to retain the talent?

+1000 to this comment. No wonder people are leave Microsoft for Oracle!

Cisco đŸ€ĄHonkHonk May 26, 2019

Elaborate on the Oracle thing please. I was thinking about going back to Microsoft but is that a bad deal in your opinion?

Strong financials as a stable company, and good pay. Good work life balance on some teams. Lots of different areas to work. Mostly... the people that are on Blind and Levels/Comp.fyi represent a small group of tech workers who want to push boundaries and get more $$$. Realistically most people in tech are just content

TC is less than half of what I care about in a job.

Amazon aazonian OP May 26, 2019

Are they things that are very hard to get outside of MSFT? Why not get paid well and have good wlb etc?

Microsoft idknbd May 26, 2019

Sometimes. But if I've found them here why bother looking elsewhere? I already have more money than I will ever spend.

No state income tax in WA

Amazon aazonian OP May 26, 2019

There is a lot of tech positions in WA, including Amazon and non-Amazon ones

Google AIMLOK May 26, 2019

Curious. How often do Microsoft employees go to Amazon, versus the opposite?

Amazon foreverL5 May 26, 2019

The ones who have settled down in Redmond probably can’t even fathom commuting all the way to Downtown/SLU.

Microsoft _john_doe May 27, 2019

Amazon moving 3 buildings to Bellevue

Amazon SlhS10 May 26, 2019

MSFT is better than 99.9% of companies so there are enough people happy working there or dream of working there.

Amazon aazonian OP May 26, 2019

In terms of culture?

Amazon SlhS10 May 26, 2019

In terms of brand and reputation. Have you ever worked at a company outside of a tech hub? They are absolute garbage in comparison.

Tangent: IMO stating G figure in thousands and Fb in M makes the numbers look further apart than they actually are, at a glance.

Microsoft MSFTBRO May 26, 2019

Lots of good engineers dont have good interview skills nor do they want to go through the hassle.

Apple thaichi May 26, 2019

Agree on this

Amazon Uhsdrd May 26, 2019

Could you argue that the ones that do may actually have the drive needed to take their career to the next level.

They don’t. Most of them are Indians on H1Bs.

I think there might be more of a difference for engineering roles? The gap may not be much if any on the business/sales side since the PM Pay bands look pretty similar to me. I was recruited by them twice while getting my MBA. Microsoft attracts talent due to the better WLB and wage/hour. MSFT it’s $67.72/hr, Google $61.33/hr and Amazon was $45.15/hr.
