How is everyone and their grandmas solving 500 leets here?

I am at 100, it took me a lot of time to get here. I started by watching basic videos on YouTube, going through grokking algorithms book, then moving to hackerrank. After I got comfortable with basic programming and data structures, I started LC. Struggled with even the basic questions and understanding their solutions. Then I asked a friend for help who would help me through the thought process. After 2 months of this struggle and trying to juggle between work, social life, and health, I stand close to 100 LC and feel there's still a long long way to go. How in the world are people throwing around numbers like 500 leets completed in 3 months? I feel stupid.

    Many ICPC World Finalist can be able to do so in 2-3 months. I personally solved nearly 800 LC in 2.5 months.

    The reason is because we have solved thousands of much harder problems than leetcode. And in order to reach the world final, you usually need to solve a LC Medium question in 5 minutes with complete code (especially if you are from Asia or East Europe)

    Leetcode is actually much easier than Topcoder, Codeforces, And many other Algo training sites.

    However, if you are not interested in those competitive algo contests, that should not be your goal.

      @KzhH222, is your goal to become top level competitive programmer or to ace coding interviews? Because the difference between those is like F1 racing vs driving a bus.

      Any tips to become smarter like them?
      Jul 15
    • It’s pattern matching and pattern recognition.

      I don’t believe LC itself can determine whether you are smart or not.

      For a vague word like smart, you can define it anyway you please.

  • I just divide what some people say on here by 5 to find the real number. ☺️

    I'll give you the python code:

    def findRealLCCount(fakeCount):
    return fakeCount // 5

    Solving a bunch of Easy questions artificially inflates the value of solved problems.

    I started solving some and it seems like it will take around 220 hours to do all of them. that's less than 20 weekends right

      So 1000 leets in 20 weekends. You solve 50 every weekend? That's insane.

      seems like about 5 per hour. you can put the hours in whenever you want.

    Never seen anyone solved 500. My friends who got into G lately solved around 200 and that is over the course of a few months as they have a family.

    Im the same as you. I didnt have a CS background but I did have an engineering background so my start point was way lower. It takes a long time to build good foundations. The peeps who have 500 plus came in guns blazing is my guess.

      I think there is a misconception that people without CS background can get a job at FANG. It’s true you don’t need CS degree but you do need CS Background. Or you need to me way smart to gain knowledge and pass interviews in a short period of time.
