Thinking about moving from Seattle to Canada (Vancouver/Toronto). What is total target compensation range for T4/T5 software engineers in companies like Facebook, Google, Uber, Amazon, Microsoft and Square? How is it like to work there and what about growth opportunities? Current TC: $160k
lol stay away.
Do you have visa issues? If not, is a bad move. Amazon Vancouver pays ~120k CAD for L4 and ~160K for L5. People that get more is because of stock growth. Taxes are double than USA and cost of living slightly higher.
Please explain how income tax is double than USA? Are you saying Canadians are taxed at over 50%?
I will happily explain. There is the income tax. In my specific situation I am married and my wife does not work. Canada does not allow joint filling, so I will be on my own (there is a small credit but nothing close to the joint filling of USA). My take home pay for 220K her in Canada is 140k, or 36.6%. The marginal rate in BC is indeed 49.8% for this pay. Comparing with my company HQ in Seattle, for 220K there, I would have 173K as take home pay. That is 21%. Then there is more. Gas is way more expensive here because of taxes. For your car, the BC government requires you to buy "insurance" (is actually a tax) from a state owned company, that averages at 4K per year for a newcomer (mine would be 4800 specifically). It get a bit cheaper over time but never at USA rates. Canada also doesn't have the home mortgage interest tax benefits that the USA has. There are also some payroll taxes (search on how NDP is exchanging MSP premiums for payroll tax) and local market factors that reduce salaries. An SDE II in Vancouver averages at 160K CAD while the same role in Seattle averages at 180K USD. Does it make sense?
Can anyone comment on other companies in Canada as well?
SanchezBro. What is ur level at Amazon? And did you move from Usa to Canada?
