I'm a woman who is thinking of joining the Uber eng. team. I need your honest opinion here since this would be a big career change for me.
Which team would u be joining
Why leave Airbnb? Not enough equity?
Airbnb is not in a good place now. Our leadership is incredibly bad/toxic and eng. challenges are non existent.
@belong My suggestion would be to request a lunch/dinner with your new team at Uber and understand how this move is beneficial for your career in the long run keeping money aside. I am joining Uber in a couple of weeks, my decision is completely based on the exciting work my new team is doing. Don’t listen to naysayers, most of them couldn’t land an offer at Uber and are pulling others down, hope this helps?
Suggest you request to meet a few people on your team-to-be, your manager and director. Talk to them, understand what they are like, why they believe in Uber and what their doubts are. It will be about the team you work with and the type of impact you have. For my example: I joined in the middle of the negative media storm 1 yr ago, when I was pretty sure Uber’s valuation is going down. I joined for the professional challenge - my team is building money systems that have higher QPS & SLA targets than normal systems I have worked before. The people I met blew me away. In thought to myself “even if Uber is worth $0 in 5 years, I will have learned so much... and if it does a turnaround and a successful IPO, I can say that I (re-) built a key system in this company and my upside will be huge”. A year later, professionally I have learned tons. I now actually personally believe the company will likely be worth $100B+ end of year 2019, based on the internal numbers, initiatives & growth I see. More importantly, I am still excited to come into work every day, learning something new. Good luck making the decision!
Thanks everyone! This is extremely helpful. I will talk to my manager, director and teammates to understand my impact better.
Hello! How many years experience do you have professionally? I’m slightly worried about what you said “Airbnb is in a bad place”. I’m about to do an on-site with them, is it really that bad?
Ask Jeff Holden, the Chief Product Officer at Uber. https://www.recode.net/2018/5/17/17366882/uber-jeff-holden-flying-car-leaving
Did you read the article? Sounds like good riddance. TK acolyte who had a big title but no actual CPO responsibility.
Jeff has been on the way out for a while, haven’t had any real chief of product responsibilities for two years. glad he left on a high note after presenting his grand vision instead of being forced out by some scandals. 4 years is a long time to go through the ups and downs of Uber, I wish him well
Airbnb has better food. They even have jalapeno bagels. Dont join uber
😂
Uber is on the rebound. Very glad I joined
Culture is probably not the big issue. Dara has done a remarkable job in a short time. The issue is that most of the upside is gone. Uber lost several markets that they were expected to win and they are trailing in AV to Waymo and others. Stock has been flat for 2 years while Amazon and all the other tech giants have doubled in that time frame. Why would you join a stalled company?
Uber stock valuation will increase upon IPO.
Plus lots of big bold bet at Uber aiming at huge TAM.
