How is working 9-5 vs FANG?

Apr 24

Started recruiting, realizing most high paying firms (e.g. Two Sigma) outaide FANG are 9-5. I work 11-6 (sometimes 12-6), anyone who's shifted from or to a normal hour job, how was it?

Pretty good. Manager likes me and I'm doing the kind of work (C++ infra) that I like doing.

That legendary Google work-life balance. When I'm ready to retire I hope it's still like that

Doesn’t Netflix actively promote a good wlb?

I heard a bizarre comment that if your manager at Netflix sees you working after hours frequently, they’ll figure you’re not as talented or effective and manage you out.

It sounds like fear mongering. Please tell me this is false.

Netflix managers don't care how many hours you work, just that you need to deliver on time. If you are really good, the wlb can be surprisingly good. Like take 2 days a week wfh and nobody cares. If you are not, it's hard to survive.

    • Do they ask leetcode style questions in interviews at Netflix?

Engineers don't have to work 9-5 at two sigma

Depends on the team I guess. For some, there is no judgement if you come in at 11.

Looking at all this, I’m overall happy with my job. I arrive in my office at 8:45 am. Have my breakfast and sit in front of my laptop doing my own work (blog, edx, reading, etc.) until 10:30. Then do actual office work till 3 pm. Sneak into the back stairs for a 20 min nap and then work again till 5 pm. Wrap up everything and leave at 5:30 pm.

Go back home to cook amazing food and share it with friends and have some great conversations.

I have a B or B+ career earning 130k as total comp but love the balance my job gives me.
