Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
Say there is a person I've had a negative experience with, in the same role as the one in interviewing for (data scientist or quantitative analyst). How likely is it that they'd find out I'm interviewing and screw me over?
Very likely? If you had a bad experience with someone who's joining your team, and there's a possibility of bad team environment, why wouldn't you stop it?
The interview isn't for a specific team, it's generic.
Then I think you'll be fine. Google is huge and I'm sure a lot of people would have been in similar position. Unless whatever happened between you is really serious, I think you should be fine. Good luck.
I find it unlikely he would find out since Google is so big - unless you're applying directly for his specific team. If you are applying to his specific team, he will likely fuck you over (which you may just deserve based on the negative experience).
Google automatically figures out which employees you may know and emails them for feedback. If you went to college or worked with the person, that person will torpedo your interview.
I may be too paranoid. Haven't seen the person in 10 years. Do they ask for this feedback before the on-site stage or after?
Facebook, really? So basically lets say if i had classmate from high school (10years ago) and he works at google. I can be sure in advance that i will be rejected at google?
Not likely! As long as you don't tell your recruiter to use that person as a Internal Reference you will be fine!
Offer an olive branch. Ask to take this person out to coffee, be friendly, and get a feeling for their attitude towards you. Hopefully people will mature and it will be fine, but if this person shows any outright animosity to you then it is clearly a red flag. But do your best to make peace and approach this head on.
Google's recruiting systems check if you've overlaps with someone (same school or company at the same time). You have to opt in and enter your info separately, so it's not like they ingest your resume without your consent... Anyway, once or twice a week, I get an automated email saying "hey do you know this person? Are they googley/smart?" I usually don't know the person, but one time I did and said he's awesome. That's the only case where someone with a grudge might hinder you. If you're already scheduled for phone screen or interviews, you'll be fine.
We (bunch of googlers from the same prior company X) found out that a notoriously bad person we all know from X was interviewing and we proactively informed recruit and permanently blackballed this person. It can be a small word sometimes, especially if one pissed off a lot of people
I know someone who ensured his past roommate would never get hired because he didn't like them. That roommate had multiple great internal references, but this googler mentioned that he was a "culture misfit". Google will never hire after that.
‘Negative’ — Did you sleep with their partner 🤗🤔
No it was just a "we don't like each other" situation. Haven't seen each other in 10 years.
Relax, people move on. But tread with caution.
