How long I can hold Bloomberg offer?

After I accepted Amazon offer, I got a Bloomberg on-site interview. I like Bloomberg more but if I leave Amazon so quickly, I would feel very guilty and it won't look good on my resume too. Can I hold the offer for 6 months or so? Thank you.

What do you mean it wouldn’t help you to begin with?

What? What do you mean?

Just ask the Bloomberg recruiter the latest date they'll have a decision for you, and let them know you have an Amazon offer (and definitely don't say you've accepted it). Then ask Amazon to postpone your start date until after the Bloomberg decision date. Say that you decided to take a little extra time off before you start with Amazon, to maximize your productivity when you join (or that you had to help family or some other reason). Then if Bloomberg rejects you, you can still join Amazon. If you join Bloomberg and renege Amazon, you'll do it before you join and it won't show up on your background check. Besides, reneging offers is common in the tech industry and top companies therefore usually don't rush experienced candidates into accepting.

I'm actually working in Amazon now, so I feel guilty, but it makes me work harder and want to compensate my teammates.

So, everyone is kind of giving advice about Bloomberg or other situations. Simple answer: Ask when the latest you can start is, tell them you want to complete your project, ideally, and will be available after Winter. I've postponed an offer for 9 months previously.

Amazon in Seattle or NYC? First decide which city you want. Bloomberg is always hiring just like Amazon is, so you can always switch. Personally I’d serve my time at Amazon for a few years. You might like it. If not, then you’ve got that experience and you’re done. Amazon is better for SDE 1, do it while you’re young and flexible.

Amazon Seattle. I like NYC much more. Yes, it's why I wonder how long I can postpone BB... Amazon does do a good job in SE.

If you’re already in Seattle, then it might be worth the suffering for a few years. Bloomberg is very internally competitive from what I’ve heard, I honestly think it may turn out to be more unpleasant than Amazon. At least as an SDE. At Amazon, ICs on the same team quickly learn to like each other and make the best of it. It’s part of the Stockholm Syndrome that goes with the 4-year vesting schedule. Say what you want about Amazon, but the camaraderie among your fellow ICs can be quite special. I know mine has been, I got very lucky. It can happen elsewhere, but I think BB will not offer that. And part of that is the size of the NY metro area. To stereotype, a lot of engineers at BB will be Indian and will commute to far flung NJ. In Seattle, there’s diversity and most will live nearby. Far higher chances of happy hours, kayaking at LU, and misc stuff and outings.
