How long commute is acceptable for you?

Looking at the insane cost of housing, moving to the suburb seems to be inevitable for many people. Assuming salary or other conditions were satisfactory, how long one-way commute time is acceptable for you(What is the maximum time willing to spend?)

Life is short, any life spent in commute is the wasted portion of life. 0.5 hours itself is too much.

Northrop Grumman HowCouldYu Sep 15, 2019

Agreed. Mine is 5-7 minutes. Biking. Lol

Agreed. Doesn’t matter if Bay Area housing prices are expensive, bite the bullet and make it work (smaller, shittier place close to work). You only live once and all the time wasted commuting will never be made back. I’m tired of hearing all these software engineers complaining about a 1-2 hour commute in to work. It’s like no one force you to buy a house out in Pleasanton or Concord. You’re the idiot for buying out there. You don’t need a 2000+ sqft house. Your 5 year old kid doesn’t care whether your house is rented or not. If he has to share a room with a sibling so what, he’ll get over it and won’t care when he goes off to college.

My commute tolerance is proportional to TC Recently added 30% to commute time for 30-50% TC increase

Salesforce OHANA GANG Sep 15, 2019

Yeah but personally I'd weight commute more than compensation, percentage for percentage. Your tradeoff decision here sounds super minus to me. What was your total comp and commute prior to the move?

There were other factors - interesting role, good mentor of a boss. Bought a Tesla with extra $$$ - autopilot reduces driving fatigue too

20 minutes tops.

Right, it should be in choices.

I live in NYC. It takes 45 minutes to get anywhere.

Twitter tcermax Sep 15, 2019

Not if you live within a few subway stops to work. Just pay more to live closer to work. Time is money.

1. That reply wreaked of privilege. Check yourself. 2. I live in the Upper East Side and work in Chelsea. Still 45 minutes.

Amgen Fin4eng Sep 15, 2019

Surprised 30Min commute was shortest option. I guess this is due to Bay Area norms....

Walmart QTFP86 Sep 15, 2019

Sadly yes.

Listening to audio books 2 hours everyday is actually awesome.

QuoteWizard boops Sep 15, 2019

It depends on whether I have to drive/pay attention If bus, 45 mins and below If driving, <30 If walking, <20 (I’m lazy)

QuoteWizard boops Sep 15, 2019

I catch up on reading and podcasts on the commute so I prefer bus, but I hated it when the commute was too short (10-15min) 😂

Google Mr. GIass Sep 15, 2019

I'm so glad I don't live in the Bay Area. The fact that a 30 minute commute is the shortest option is very telling. 30 minutes is too much!

Be willing to live in a smaller home so that you can afford to live right near work. And don't work for places that aren't accessible. These companies with their "office park" locations out on highways that only car owners can get to are ridiculous and should be illegal.
