Joined Amazon after 3 YOE doing startup work. Came in as SDE I at 170k TC. When should I consider leaving to level up? I imagine after a year or two I will be ready to do another set of interviews and assuming good System Design I should be leveled in a higher band. My team had good WLB and interesting work. Presumably I’d get promoted to SDE II within these two years which will give me a slight bump but I’ve heard it’s nothing much. Thinking of working through EPI this year and practicing system design at a smooth pace and then re-evaluating each year. Personally, I feel like I made it. So I just want to make sure I’m getting paid fair FAANG market rate. No need to try to get the next level too early and have to crash and burn to keep an extra 50k coming in.
Stay for four years. You'll take a huge hit once the signing stock has all vested.
18-24 months. TC at Amazon doesn't grow like at other companies. So far it has worked out for everyone because of stock growth. If the stock didn't grow your TC would stay stagnant for 2 years. Also you would have learnt quite a lot by then to take your skills somewhere else and get a 100k+ bump in your pay. Also that period reflects that you stayed longer enough and were not just piped out.
Yup. After my initial vest the money dropped 80%
What would you say made the difference for you to get promoted so quick
I was quite aggressive and relentless on a lot of things. I slam on mediocre developers. I am not sure if that worth it. I reduced my lunch time to 15mins and burn oil when necessary. This is part of the reason I am leaving.
Your base will get bumped 20-30% when you get promoted and you’ll get more shares.
