Wanted to get a comparison of scope and ratio of E6 per team.
Mostly interested in systems space (storage, database, networking etc.)
Does a E6 act as a lead of a team? Or is more of an IC role?
Some teams will have several, many teams will have none. Most of it depends on how big of a scope team/org has, how much specialization and ambiguity there is. Very much an IC role but where IC finds big problems/opportunities without any guidance and convinces others these problems are worth pursuing.
In other words an E6 is not just an a tech lead in a given team, but someone known and visible beyond it. That is what a well performing E6 would be.
