No I haven’t read it but I agree with it
Are those books relevant today? Or would it be like reading about the barter economy of ancient humans in the Stone Age?
They are if you want to criticize socialism and liberalism, I would say.
I haven't read them, but I think economics and sociology has had such tremendous paradigm shifts in the last 100 and especially the last 50 years, that those books are merely a fun read for history lovers, but hold no real learning value.
Have read parts of it but couldn't keep me engaged for too long. However one thing which has is Rick and Morty. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
In the grand scheme of things, we haven't really changed so much in 200 years or even 2000 years. That's why there are strong believers of the views of Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and Friedrich Nietzsche at the same time.
I read volume 1 of Das Kapital. It was worth the effort. David Harvey has a series of lectures on it available for free online. They helped me understand and discuss what I was reading. I'll read Wealth of Nations at some point.
I read the Wealth of Nations. It’s bang on in the pin manufacturing industry.
Piketty’s central thesis is all we really need to know in modern times: investment income grows faster than wages. And tax on investment is less than tax on wages. This means you make more money by having money than working. You’re best off sitting still and being lazy and having wealth. This is taxed less than working and makes more money every year. These are value judgments by society. The long term outcome is wealth accumulates more and more. It may not be sustainable past a certain point. Who knows?
You can take actionable items from this too: it’s better to save/invest an extra $1 than to earn an extra $1. The money saved will, on average, get a larger “raise” every year than you will. Data backs this up solidly. You’re better off trying to sock away wealth than spending money to try to get a raise. That might mean extra school for some, or spending money on social events to curry favor with management. Invest the money instead because our society rewards investing more than improving personally.
