Assume need to afford a decent single family house that is 30 minutes away from workplace. Two school age kids.

Lol these numbers are so high. Tc between my partner and I is 140k. We have a house 5 bedrooms in Renton. (30 min from my office downtown with no traffic) I drive a new Lexus. Financed not leased. I bought new in 2016. Have 2 kids. Plenty of money for savings and spending. It really just depends on your lifestyle and how much fun money you feel you need at the end of the day. If you get a single tc of any of those and your partner does not work you are doing more than well here

A 30 years old house can easily be over 1 million dollars in 2019. The monthly mortgage payment is at least $3000. How much much fun money remains?

I live in Renton. I bought my house for 310k. Mortgage is 1800 a month. There’s plenty of fun money every month. I bought a 3700 tv last week and have plenty of wiggle room.

Downtown studios and 1br are like 2k+ per month. You can get so much cheaper if you move outside the city and take one of the million bus lines to work

Parking and driving will be costly if you live directly in downtown too

Yes. Downtown living is dumb. My friends can’t get parking it’s a pin in the ass for people to come over. If you have a car it’s pretty much a waste of money. Car payment 845. Ins 235. Garage 250 and I’m downtown so mostly walked. Everything is super expensive even in grocery stores. Sugar tax on soda and energy drinks. Tax on a 2 liter of soda is more than the soda price. But if you’re single and go out a lot it can be fun.

The poll said "Seattle area," not "Seattle proper." Some of you guys are reading the poll to mean Laurelhurst.

His numbers probably assume Seattle proper. You can get bye on far less in Renton Tukwila south Seattle Kent etc.
