How much influence do recruiters have on compensation?

How much influence & power do recruiters have at Amazon? Is it ultimately the hiring manager who makes the call?

They represent you and propose your comp to comp team but recruiters don’t make any decision.

It is mainly the hiring manager for the position

At Amazon they have a low to high range given to them by the hiring manager/finance. They have very little power at Amazon.

@endofday1 How do you know this?

They actually have a lot of power over offers.

Some of these comments are way off base. I’ve been a hiring manager many times and can guarantee recruiting has a huge part in the candidates offer. There’s many times where they construct the offer entirely without consulting me - I simply get copied for the approval. Only if it’s a very strategic position or a difficult negotiation do I get pulled in to help with offer details. Recruiter also chases down approvals for any exceptions. So moral of the story is always play nice with your recruiter.

What's the best way to handle a recruiter asking for your desired total compensation? I just moved past phone interviews with Amazon and I'm heading to on sites. Recruiter asked what I wanted for base, bonus, and equity. I replied that my current compensation is competitive for the market and left it at that, if you can offer any advice I'll send the very best vibes your way.

Do you have a target number you’d like to hit? Also do you know the range for the position you’re interviewing for? I’d aim for the top. Depending on the team they may start low and expect you to accept or negotiate up.
