Like Infosys , Wipro,Cognizant,HCL,TCS pay in Bay Area . On one side I see fresh under grads make 120-150 K plus in Bay Area ..I see these outsourcing companies are the main beneficiaries of the H1b for the last 10 years at least ..
Just their general pay structure for IC2-IC6
I had a friend working for Cognizant for 8 years and was getting 80k in SFO. I wouldn’t advise applying to these companies. They underpay you big time. Leetcode and apply some where else full time.
At the airport?
^ this is why you are still at Salesforce.
I have friend who came here on H1B through infosys and was paid 78k in San Jose with more than 7 yrs experience.
7 yoe, 90k in SF here in an h1b factory
Damn, that's rough. I make more than that with 2 years of experience in the Midwest. I'm a bit conflicted on h1b. Like I'm kind of against our country taking the smart people from other countries and our companies taking advantage of them. But at the same time it appears those smart people like yourself would rather live here working for those companies and I feel it would be wrong to deny you that opportunity.
Yes, there are many people who would work at a lower salary for a few years, and then either move up the ladder or move to a better company after gaining some experience. I have seen people from my company move to several good companies after a few years (so you can't necessarily categorize them as not-smart). Initially, it's a struggle though. Also, read my reply on another comment below to get a better picture.
Merit based immigration can solve lots of issues
Half the h1b folks wont be here if merit was the criteria . We would get better quality engineers from around the world working for faang instead of sweatshop labor at cogni, hcl etc
Merit based will still be good. And just working for faang is not the criteria for merit

Wow didn’t know these kinda companies pay so low. But based on the candidates I’ve talked to from there it makes sense. If they were any good they would be able to find a real company willing to sponsor h1b
I hate to read this comment. I mentioned in one of the previous post as well, that I work for an Indian outsourcing company on a very low salary. I work in the healthcare sector where most 'real companies' don't provide visa support. They outsource the visa hassle to contracting companies which in turn hire smart people and make them work at low salaries. I request you to understand the h1b scenario in detail, especially outside the tech industry, to get a better picture. I personally don't mind if someone calls me stupid, but the people I work with are phDs (immunology, biostatistics, structural engineering, industrial engineering etc) and really smart people, who work at 5 digit TCs. Calling them stupid isn't the best thing to do. While I do get a lot of interview calls from the 'real companies' in the healthcare domain, they don't interview me when I tell them I need a visa. I have also seen the same job position then come to me through my contracting company.
Just take Apple . They have few thousands people in Cupertino working through various Indian outsourcing firms . They pay 70$for one headcount . They have 250 billion in cash . I think all these Indian companies go and bend over and don’t have any self respect for them ..Apple treats them literally like shit and they go and suck them ..where Tim Cook goes and sucks chinese becuz he gets 30 billion in revenue from China ..
