Looking at joining Google in MTV, but I'm not sure where the line is that makes it worthwhile. TC in Seattle is 220k, and I've determined that I'd need 250k in CA to take home the equivalent. However since COL is so much higher (housing is double) I figure it's more like 280k (+30%) just to stay even.

There's also the fact that I would have to sell my house which is always a pain. I feel like even a minor net gain (e.g. 40%) might not be worth it.

Edit: it's an L6 non-tech position so I know comp wouldn't be bad, just not sure how high I should be shooting.

Given CoL and taxes that's basically a lateral move comp wise, and probably lower standard of living. You would be willing to move there despite that for the job itself?

You move for the increase in quality of life and career prospects. If you get an immediate raise that's just ice on the cake.

100% yes, traffic exists in CA but usually means you have to drive 45 instead of 85. In Seattle every freeway is stop and go even on weekends. God help you if you have tik cross a bridge!

Haha the bridges aren't that bad (I cross them every day) but if there's an accident you are screwed. It's all about working offset hours to avoid peak times. You are correct about weekends though going through downtown. So terrible. Always. For no reason

I90 and 520 "aren't bad!?" Joking right? Or do you cross them at 5am and 10pm?

520 is almost never bad until you hit the connecting freeways and 90 only at peak times. But yes I do generally avoid them between 7-9am and 4-7pm. The bigger issue is getting out of South lake Union during rush hour... Those 1-2 miles are a third of the commute time

Yea Mercer is a 45 minute adventure lol. In August Seattle is hands down the best city in the country. The weather is perfect, the days are incredibly long, and the city is alive. Wealthy people flock in from all over the country for to summer in Seattle. It's incredible.

August in Seattle has ~70F days that last from 6:30am-9:30pm. The natural scenery is at it's best during this one month of the year. You might forget about all the other problems with this city, e.g. traffic, property crime, rampant issues with homelessness and drug use, etc, during the Seattle summer.
