Looking at joining Google in MTV, but I'm not sure where the line is that makes it worthwhile. TC in Seattle is 220k, and I've determined that I'd need 250k in CA to take home the equivalent. However since COL is so much higher (housing is double) I figure it's more like 280k (+30%) just to stay even. There's also the fact that I would have to sell my house which is always a pain. I feel like even a minor net gain (e.g. 40%) might not be worth it. Edit: it's an L6 non-tech position so I know comp wouldn't be bad, just not sure how high I should be shooting.
Bay is bae
Took nearly 200% bump to get me to move. Then again, I’m coming from a LCOL area
You move for the increase in quality of life and career prospects. If you get an immediate raise that's just ice on the cake.
Quality of life is definitely not something I would expect to see an increase in leaving Seattle for MTV. Not unless the raise was dramatic. Career prospects are up in the air given Sea is a tech hub as well, but I do acknowledge the Bay is better for that.
It depends, if you are the type of person that enjoys nice weather, going out, dating, good food, live entertainment, and the outdoors the increase in quality of life is significant. If you prefer a slightly larger bank balance and sitting inside waiting for August then maybe the bay won't be for you :)

Do you use agents for rentals down there or is it all self service?

Given CoL and taxes that's basically a lateral move comp wise, and probably lower standard of living. You would be willing to move there despite that for the job itself?
MTV is the center of the universe for Google when it comes to career opportunities
