How often do you switch jobs/companies?

On my 3rd in under 3 years. Year 1: late stage “startup” that was way over hyped— 110k + 5k relo + an insignificant amount of RSUs that I didn’t vest any of Year 2: weird finance startup that ended up laying off half the company (not me though): 140k Year 3: startup I probably shouldn’t have joined in the first place with a theoretical TC of 200k with 150k base, 50k bonus (which I feel won’t happen) and a large stake of equity. CS undergrad from a top 25 depending on your rank sourcing with internships at one of Elon’s many corporations. Current plan is leetcoding and then interviewing for only companies with liquid equity or other large cash component to TC and jumping ship in the winter! Startups are super not worth it, especially this early on.
I do it wrong. I've changed jobs 5 times in 20 years (2 of those were 6 month gigs) and have only increased TC twice during the switch. That said, I have had TC increased of 30%+ percent a couple times at jobs and one of almost 300%. The last was due to acquisition of a startup by a public company. For my current job search, I'm looking for at least a 20% increase. Edit: Total TC in that time is about $2.5-3M
3M over 20 years = 150K on average?
Slightly less, actually. All startups, the last of which turned into $$$, but only because I was an executive. So, only a couple years of TC > $500k. I'll probably make more in the next 5 years than I did in the previous 20.
