Hi, I have one year of experience and am currently a software dev at Amazon. I recently got an applied computer vision offer from a different team and have been thinking about what I wanna do long term. I want to get into higher level positions like director, vp of a mid sized company in 10 years and am not sure whats the path to go. 1. Is an engineering background more important than an applied deep learning / computer vision background? 2. I am also open into joining a startup or opening my own startup ( dont know how to come up with an idea, would appreciate help). From my conversations with two startup owners, it seems an engineering background is more important than a machine learning one, is that true? What would you suggest?
According to my experience interviewing with midsized companies, they usually prefer SDE that understands the surface of ML to ML researcher that doesn't have enough exp in sw development. They usually start looking for ML researchers when they already have a stable business, and want to have a 'proper lab' that does fundamental ML works.

If you want to come in at a tech lead or director position you’re not gonna gain anything by going into ML; that would only set you up for chief data scientist position or similar which your poorly situated for (assuming you don’t have an ML degree/background so anyone tailored for that position will beat you out). Sounds like your best options are to stay where you are while trying to up your responsibilities and maybe more to a TPM role
I do have a master's degree focused in ML from a top-15 school for ML/AI. However, I don't want to go into an individual role like a chief data scientist.
