Can I continue working as SWE or Data scientist if i have a Physics Phd and want to move from OPT to H1B?
It’s possible. But really expect a RFE about your qualifications. They will ask you to explain, with your college transcripts, why do you consider yourself competent in SWE.
Is Data scientist easier to explain? Considering that there’s a lot of data work in the phd
It’s hard to say if it’s easier. You’ll have to explain to someone with very little knowledge about either software engineering or data scientist, how does your degree relates to the job being offered to you.
Hey I thought it wasn't important at all once u have a few YoE under ur belt. I was corrected yesterday on blind when 2 different people told me h1 denied cuz they had EE degrees working as swe. 🥺
Yes, this is a thing. USCIS is picking up cases whose education doesn't align with job title, even though it may be close or they may have been working in that domain for several years.
And it's a bs thing. They have relevant 6-10 yrs experience!!
OP, I know someone who was a PhD physics working as a data scientist with me. I am not sure about his outcome on the h1b filing (I think he got an rfe). But he later moved to another country because he got a good opportunity there with less stringent rules around this bs. Happy to put you in touch with him via LinkedIn if you need more information.
How about H1B1 visas? Are they as strict as the regular H1B?
Same rules apply to them. They just have a distinct numerical cap.
Does an undergrad in Mathematics from a different country suffice for H1B in Data Science?
As relevant as is gun ownership to one’s safety and security
Impressed!
