What's the level of involvement in technical decision making?
☝️😄😆
Nothing. You basically organize jira tickets
Glorified project manager at Microsoft. Set up meetings, manage scrum etc.
Huh. Interesting.
At Google, at least one of the interviews is technical and is conducted by a SWE.
Technical as in coding or generally technical?
Coding and system design.
You mostly take notes and write status reports...
Technical as in you talk to technical people.
At Amazon, TPMs have windows laptops. That should tell you how little they deal with the code. With that said, they still spend most of their time reading tech plans to find the simplest architecture that gets a big project done. It is actually quite challenging and fulfilling for most engineers
@pinkcat so is it a KRA for a TPM to contribute to architectural/design decisions?
The TPM hate is pretty high in here. It’s sad to see it. I’ve worked at companies where they marginalize software engineers based on stereotypes. I’ve worked at companies where they marginalize comms based on stereotypes. All that I know is that people all bring their own strengths or they wouldn’t be employed for very long. Putting people down based instead of helping them succeed is sad to see here
This is the most sane comment I’ve seen on Blind (on TPMs). Some of the TPMs I’ve known (including myself) were engineers and engg mgrs in prior roles. MarginalIzing this role as a note-taker or status-reporter serves to perpetuate the stereotype further.
This role have been destroyed by the agile culture. The TPM really should be PM-T.
