Avoid teams with only Chinese or Indians especially with a Chinese/Indian manager
I was looking at applying to a company that uses Rails, but the rub is that I have never used it. My server-side areas of comfort are C# and Node, and I love the MVC pattern. I could probably hit the ground running if I really dug in for a few weeks, but I'm not sure how to convince a company (albeit a dev centric one) that after 15 years, I can pick up anything pretty quickly. I went from zero to Swift in a few weeks recently with a little help from Pluralsight and SO. Any success stories of how you've addressed this when applying in the past?
Yeah, if you are really interested in the company then just start learning it, and build an interesting little side project. Show that 1) you're able to learn/apply new knowledge, 2) you take initiative, and 3) you actually cared about their stack enough to start looking into it.
Simple. Learn it
That's the plan, but I want to strike while the iron's hot and apply soon while the position's open. Maybe tell them in my cover letter that in learning it currently and will be able to hit the ground running?
