Asking for a friend: I recently graduated with a bachelor's in Economics from UC Santa Cruz. Im thinking about teaching myself how to program by shadowing all of another UC Irvine's programming courses to save money. Do I have a real shot at becoming a software engineer at a good company?

Absolutely. I know great software engineers that are graduates of mathematics, physics, chemistry, economics, political science, etc. Start small. Learn some basic programming, get a job on that and continue learning. Check this out: https://haseebq.com/how-to-break-into-tech-job-hunting-and-interviews/

Sure, but what do you actually want to do?
Also, do you simply want to code or do you want to engage in software design?
Or do you want to work in a tech company as a TPM and participate in the process of developing cool tech without being a coder?

If you want to code, what do you want to do? Frontend? Backend? Fullstack? DevOps? Infrastructure? UI+UX?

Lolwut. Why didn't you take a relevant course in school then? I know I'd definitely say no to you unless you had a fair amount of experience. Nobody has time to train some non technical person how to program

Please ask your friend to focus on finding patterns in data to improve economics of a country! So basically a data scientist would be something he should pursue, also the most needed for the better future!
