How to block YouTube at home

My 6 years old watches way too much YouTube daily. I turned on restricted model on all my devices, still lots of contents are not quite healthy and super addictive to a 6 year old. I think my last option is to block YouTube entirely from my home’s WIFI. Wonder what is the easiest way to do so on my iPhones and PCs?

You should be able to login to your router and block it there

This is how you raise a hacker. Take away their YouTube and then watch how they learn to get it back.

I don’t know how to block it but my 2 year old is enamored with the low budget animations on there, trucks getting paint dumped on them. It’s terrifying.

  • This is a legit struggle in our house with our 3.5 y/o. We found content on YouTube kids to be a bit less zombiefying. That said, we still do a tech purge every few weeks for a couple days. We find this achieves some balance as he is not quite up to grasping proportionality. Unfortunately since kiddo 2 showed up 6 months ago the I-nanny has become real in our house at times.

Same here... I and my wife was able to control screen time better in the past... However with our second, it becomes much harder. Also I feel Netflix’s child channels are much healthier than restricted YouTube, but... my 6 years old chooses YouTube every time...

Serious question, why does YouTube kids serve ads? They don’t even seem targeted at kids. Is the assumption that some dad like me is stuck watching little baby bum for the 345th morning in a row and I’ll finally fall for that sandals beach resort ad?

It would be better. However when watching on PC from chrome, I don’t see YouTube kids as an option...

I just switch off the router. While some buffered content gets played, I am next to the kid doing reading or doing a non screen related activity that kid also likes. And the shift happens once connectivity is lost. But it takes effort to involve them in an alternate activity and then escape out. Doesn't work all the time, but more often than not it is smooth.
I make it a point not to have any game or app that works in offline mode too. Also I switch off mobile data while at home.

It helps to put the blame on something or someone external like security guard, time, weather, etc

Kudos. You taught your kid too much tech way too early. You probably thought the iq will increase if you let them do tech. No?

As we work in tech, and have to WFH occasionally, and have to watch phone for emails, I see no practical ways to not let my kids touching those...

Don't let your kid touch your phone? Just because you check your email doesn't mean your kid has to. Hasn't been much an issue for us, until I started seeing the (non tech) grandparents teaching our kids how to use the phone... :/

Does he mean needing something to preoccupy the kids while they work from home? How do you keep your kids busy?

Perhaps Youtube team should consider adding an option to show only the videos that were approved by experts (ie doctors, psychologists).

If your router supports it, you could block from the router itself.

Can you block it in router? Or look into raspberry Pi for filtering /monitoring all traffic
