How to convert Facebook E4 offer to E5?

Interviewed at facebook for E5 recently. Recruiter claimed all along that I'm being interviewed for E5. The day after the interview, I got a congratulatory email saying the hiring committee approved an offer for me. A few days later the recruiter slyly slips into an email this like "by the way, your offer was approved at Level 4", which completely shocked me.

Now, is there a way to convert the E4 offer to E5? Does a competing offer help? I have more than enough experience and skill set that is required for E5.

What a country wise discrimination. Thought Silicon Valley believes in equality and fair play.

That’s quite fair if you think about it: your experience from say Indian bodyshop may not be immediately applicable at FAANG, and E4 means an industry hire already.

      @Facebook
Your assumptions right there about work experience outside US:
      1) It’s from an Indian Company
      2) It’s a body shop company

What about someone who had 7 yoe working in WeChat or in Flipkart. Still penalize them because working in America gets you extra brownie points?

Funny how quickly people can make judgement about “right level” with minimal information available about someone’s profile

I think if you have worked in faang company in India, you should try by having compatative offer from Google.

Levels are decided based on interview performance (Jedi + Pirate). You didn’t show enough leadership and design depth. No # of years is irrelevant.

FB will give out E4 to candidates up to 9 years of experience. At 9+ it’s E5 or no hire.

Facebook almost never changes the level after the interviews. But if you've multiple L5 offers from companies whose level map directly to FB then you've a strong point or else forget about it.

Saywhatt, you are wrong. I know of multiple cases where FB changed levels from 4 to 5 to match Google L4 offer. It’s actually a joke how easily they adjust levels, the only thing they can’t change is to compensate beyond the level’s band.

Absolute BS. I am well aware how our leveling works.

The only cases I know of E4 to E5, is when candidates were at borderline and had a competing offer (Google or Amazon SDE3).

FB either decided to do another leveling interview or sometimes upleveled to E5 if we had enough data points in candidates.

So whatever recruiter says is the level or you can ask for it?

You probably didn’t do very well in the interviews so they placed you at a lower level, bring a competing offer

    • Facebook Ghyer
Yeah but if you do relatively well with some mixed reviews it will affect the leveling

If you didn’t get an IC5 offer that means that the hiring committee believes you would struggle at that level. You don’t want to be hired as 5 with a significant chance to fail to meet expectations and be managed out later (as a manager I’ve seen a couple of these cases). Take the offer and show that you are actually an IC5 when you join, then you’ll get promoted to IC5.
The caveat with this approach is that your initial grant will be lower. But you will have set foot in the Bay, gain experience in a faang company and a promo. With all that in your hands you can easily find an IC5 offer somewhere else, with its corresponding initial grant, in the future.

You are talking like the interview performance and hiring committee’s evaluation is equivalent to performance at a level.
      Sep 11, 2018
    • Facebook iuga45
That is the whole point of the interview process and leveling. It is not exactly equivalent but there is a big correlation between leveling and actual performance. Of course, anyone is free to decide that the hiring comitee is wrong and that they have missleveled. Having been involved in the hiring process, I don’t think I would take such risk but...

Usually not. Leveling is done during interview and can't be normally changed after the interviews.
