How to deal with jealousy?

I quit my PhD in engineering and pursued a career as a SWE. Now looking at people with PhD and their flashy titles, I kinda want to travel back in time and finish my PhD or try to get into a PhD programme in Computer Science. I know that these are not the solution. But how do I deal with this emotion?

If you are in industry, I don’t know how much Phd helps in the long run. If your friends are in academia, they might also be jealous of your TC

No, after finishing their PhDs they also entered the work force in the private industry. Working for big corp. (I guess) their PhDs helped to get their foot into the door.

Nope. In tech it's all.leetcode and system design. Even if u do PhD - there will be some rock star from MIT or Stanford down levels u. So comparison doesn't work, and see how u can leverage existing skills that u have.

Ask yourself what do you value. Flashy title or actual value generated? They aren't mutually exclusive, don't get me wrong. The title doesn't get the job done, a person does.

My vote: pursue it and get that PhD. The prestige, extra knowledge, status, and future growth potential are WORTH every minute you spend on getting that PhD! It also opens up academic positions for you to pursue. I assume money is not an issue for you to quit work and go back to school.

Thanks for the irony. But I get it that pursuing a PhD is not the solution.... just try to figure out how to make the best out of my current situation.

Talk to mental health specialists at your company who will teach you about cognitive behavioral therapy or learn how to have confidence and get over yourself.

I have a PhD and after 20 yrs still very hard to show need / value if it in private industry in CS/IT. can’t even tell who has and who does not even after working for years with them - unless you check their LinkedIn. Academic jobs need it rest it does not help - many will argue your loose more time doing it then you gain from it. So maybe your issue is not PhD getting flashing title but something else - look more deeply or to more people

cs phd degrees certainly open doors right? there are lucrative sde jobs that usual bachelor/master can't do

Oracle pzd Jun 28, 2019

That's just wrong. There are exceptions, but generally PhDs don't open doors any more than 5 years of industry experience.

I know phds who regret not getting into industry earlier and seeing many younger ppl at higher positions. Not every PhD works for Google/Fb in research. End of the day, grass is greener

Wow so strange. I have PhD friends who are jealous of me for being smart about not wasting my youth in academia and gaining valuable early year experience in industry. I pull in twice and for some 3x their TC.

You envy flashy title? 😂

Past is past. Move on. Titles are shitty. People who haven't gone to college are inventing lot of things. Your work should speak for yourself. Not your title.
