I've been in a help desk position in one way or another for the past 4 going on 5 years (three years while I was in college and a year and a half afterward.) I'm currently in the process of racking up certifications and putting myself through different types of training to show that I'm capable on my resume but when I apply for jobs that are not help desk related I'm not considered for the position at all no phone interviews no nothing. I even had a situation where I applied for an entry-level network technician position and without even denying that application they suggested I apply for the help desk position instead. I know I'm capable of doing more than resetting passwords and answering phone calls. It's not like I hate being in help desk but I've been doing it for so long that I have nothing more to learn from being in that position and there's no longer any challenge to it.
I got out by getting a NOC position and then moving up the ranks in operations from there
Help desk is actually a great stepping stone to get into Cyber Security, especially in the DFIR (Digital Forensics and Incident Response) space.
Apply to Lockheed Martin
Any position in particular?
I would search by keywords what ur interested in/sort-of have experience in. We supposedly have 1000 openings hiring now
I internally transferred into a network role from help desk. They gave me a chance and I took full advantage of it. You should tell these places where you want to work the same story you wrote here. I’d give you a chance if I was them if I heard your reasoning. Tell them you’re just looking for an opportunity and want to learn.
Having documented effort at being a perpetual learner, especially knocking out degrees while working full time and having passion for more is a great step. Like some of these posts have said...try to look, and see what roles you find exciting, and could utilize existing knowledge, and also what would be a stretch and fill in the gaps accordingly. Don't let companies passing up on you deter you. They just didnt see your potential or you didnt focus on transferrable strengths and tailor those as well in your resume or cover letter. Keep at it though!
Grind, stretch your resume, get certs. Or just LC and win
I'm new on here so I don't know what LC means lol
NVM I just googled it. Thanks!
