How to get E5 promotion at Facebook

Mar 14 21 Comments

Joining FB as E4 with 5 yoe.

What’s the likelihood I’ll get promoted after year 1?

I’ve heard others getting promoted 6 months after joining, but surely that’s not typical

It doesnt work that way. It depends on your skills, ramp up time and ability to demonstrate you are awesome.

No one will care about your yoe.
You can get promoted within 6 months to years

I get that. But for someone who works hard, quick learner, and had previous project lead experiences... what’s typical?

I don’t know if there is a typical, it really does depend on you. If you are more productive and show better judgement than coworkers at your level you’ll get promoted. If you appear middle of the pack, you won’t.

Sorry... I'd like to be helpful, but seriously - it's hard to say. The only thing I can tell you is that you can get promoted as early as 6-12 months after joining if you perform at the e5 bar.

Getting a promotion means your manager needs to see consistency (the key aspect of the promo) in your performance at the next level. This usually requires approx 6 months (from the minute you start performing at e5 level) + 3 months for your ramp up.

This means that if you join as an under leveled 5, you can make realistically get promoted after 9 months

It's a bell curve... So all depends on how you fair amongst your peeps.

Smaug - that's not how e5s are evaluated. You are not directly compared to your peers - if you meet the bar for e5 - you get promoted

Here we go again with the “be awesome and get promoted” brainwash spiel.

gekD54 has no idea what is meant by “awesome”.

Be “awesome” and get a promotion.? Like how, like in the legos movie?

      Everything is awesoooooome.

EMV - haha - you are a sad troll, ah?
Repeating your negative comments (without knowing much) in all the threads.

I've been in the room when these decisions were made more than once. It is not a generic "be awesome" - there are clear career expectations for each level and, if your manager does their job - you get the right guidance for what you need to accomplish and get promoted shortly after meeting the bar (a half).

3, 4 and 5 expectations are straightforward- what needs to be done is pretty clear and the system is designed to help you get there

6+ - that's the tricky part and many people wont make it. A strong manager is super helpful here.

Other way around for me. I rejected Facebook just like many other colleagues.

How does Zuckerberg’s coolaid taste anyway?

Uh huh sure. Who signed your offer letter?

I’ll wait for you to confer with your “colleagues”

I ended the interview half way through. Right when I learned that developers “own” the product but other people own the timeline. No leadership!

1.5 yrs if you are solid. 1 year if you got down leveled. Average is 2-2.5 years.

After 3 years if you cant get to E5, you will be fired ;)
