I graduated last year with degree in computer engineering (not CS). Since then I have been working as a performance engineer analyzing performance of systems and do not code. I am trying to interview for SWE rules but so far have not gotten an SWE interviews. I only get a few performance engineering interviews if any. How can I increase my chances of landing SWE interviews? I am thinking of doing a side project and maybe some online courses but I feel employers mainly look at work experience and I do not develop much at work.
How do you present your experience in your CV? Performance engineering probably involves some scripting, using dedicated plotting tools etc. Writing good scripts may be called development too. Show your understanding of distributed systems and their performance aspects, show recruiters that you can automatize things. I started as a performance engineer myself and it has been an advantage since then!
Yah show us ur resume
This is not a typical performance engineering. I work specifically with my company products which have their own tools and languages. I mainly use those tools without creating new ones. For some reason the only companies which call for interview are FAANG ones. I had onsite with FB and G over the past year (infrastructure roles and no offer). Other companies never give a chance for first step interview. I can share my resume if that would help. Maybe host on imgur if that is ok
Gotta go to small startups
Start your own company/project and put it on the resume. Have good code on GitHub. Apply to as many startups as you can, even if they don’t have any openings other than senior eng (angel list might help there). Once confident with interviews, reach out to your network and ask for referrals (you may get just one or two responses, so don’t waste that opportunity right away).
Do some cometetive programming and include your profile links in your resume.
I think the easiest way to get your first engineering job will be to join a non-tech company. The bar will be a lot lower, so it will be much easier to get your foot in the door. If all else fails, consider a paid internship first.
Thats what I have done with SAP. My current role is engineering but performance engineering but only using internal tools and no scripting. I apply to companies but dont get called for interviews. For some reason only FAANG companies let me interview (made it to 2 onsites past year with no offer)
It’s because FAANG companies aren’t as picky about what languages/tech stack you work with (they expect you to be able to pick up pretty much anything quickly and therefore care mostly about fundamentals) and are hiring at such large scale that getting an interview is not very difficult. Getting an offer, on the other hand, is not as easy (especially without much relevant experience). Are there any opportunities to transfer internally at SAP?
