Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
I look younger than I really am, so people treat me like a kid sometimes and I totally hate it. Although I have great ideas and know my thing, it feels like I don’t have as much voice as others. I stand for myself and present things confidently but somehow people end up not trusting my ideas/ solutions just because I am a newbie and young. Is there something that I can do to look as mature as I feel? Any tips on how to talk and/ dress effectively? Oh, and I am a woman in tech btw. Edit- Other people having similar ideas to that of mine get heard and appreciated. Thanks.
I need to decipher that "👓".
If your ideas were great then people must be stealing them. If they don’t then either your ideas are not do great or you’re unable to present them. Age and gender are irrelevant. I always blame myself when my great ideas are not accepted.
Dress more professionally and speak with more confidence and authority.
And if this doesn't work, dress even more professionally and speak with even more confidence and authority.
If that doesn't work then it's time to reevaluate your plans and see if they are really any good. Gain influence with colleagues. If both of those fail then clearly something else is at work.
This isn't about age. It's about influence. Work on building relationships with your peers and get to know them (and what inspires them). Start getting buy in before the meetings. Another thing to do is listed and acknowledge other peoples' ideas. Sometimes we get so caught up with our own stuff we forget to support others in the others.
OP I have no advice for you. I am sure the trivial ideas suggested here u must have already tried. There def is a bias against women in tech. I didn’t realize that until recently. Edit: the eye glass idea is pretty good tho. Instant authoritative look for some people.
People will ignore your ideas sometimes even if you're a guy. Sometimes they will listen. Be emotionally resilient and persistent, day after day, month after month, and you can eventually win them over 🙂
Things that seem to be helping me: 1. I stopped dressing casually to work (no sweatshirts etc) and dress more professionally now. 2. The realization that I can speak up confidently even if I am not a 100% sure about what I’m saying 3. Faking confidence
Not sure this applies to tech, but I found that dressing more professionally made a noticeable difference in how people treated me. (At one office, I kept getting mistaken for a food delivery person until I started dressing better). It takes time to build credibility, and no one trusts the new person. Sometimes when you’re new you can build more credibility by asking insightful questions than proposing ideas. But, sometimes I’ve had to be a little combative in meetings to be heard Having a supportive and trusting manager helps a lot.
I'm not a woman but have experienced the same. Dressing more mature / professionally has helped, as well trying to communicate in a more confident manner.
Or May be your ideas aren’t that great as you think it is. I realized that myself after years of experience.
Can you please stop spamming my mailbox.
Done. If it doesn’t work change your email. It will work for sure.
