I am on h1b and so can't buy a house. My years of earning is hanging in bank account. I do have around $200k ready to invest. Any suggestions about where to start and how to invest? Stock market? If so mutual funds, etfs or which one in particular? I called fidelity investment advisor they told me to invest in their mutual fund that had worst returns over the years. Any advice about what to do with $200k please?
Why can’t you buy a house on h1b? Everyone does
I bought my first house while on h1
Invest this money in stock market. Just buy spy and you will be able to retire in 20 years. https://chalkyourfuture.com/home/retirement-savings-and-cash-flow-during-retirement-calculator/
google “vanguard bogleheads lazy portfolios”
A house may not be a great investment. While they appreciated significantly in the Bay Area in the last decade, on average the return is lower than from stocks. You do save on rent, but pay the property tax, mortgage interest and either maintenance costs or HOA fees. And if you do have to leave the country, remotely managing your property can be a major headache. I second the stock market idea, although be prepared that it could crash in the short term. You should invest in stocks only if you won't need that money for at least 10 years.
Stocks are historically a better investment
Growth and dividend stocks, etfs , bonds, reits, options. No actively managed mutual funds tho. Depends on tour risk tolerance and long term goals
So, to answer your question, maybe Nike and UA stock. First republic bank stock is pretty good. The usual goog, aapl, MSFT, fb, nflx.
How much time are you willing to invest into understanding your needs?
