How to reach $500k TC

Google / Eng Yorkckkwe
Oct 7 83 Comments

I have 18 yoe. MS in CS. Current TC is $230k in Bay Area. For the last 6 years I am working on iOS platform. Just finished 1 year at G. Technical skills is not a problem.

Single earner with one kid. I just can seem to save anything and $230k seems unsustainable. What should I do to get to $500k TC ASAP. I would prefer to avoid FB and Amazon.
Any other tier 1 or 2 companies that can pay well?

L4 band is pretty wide. Don’t think your skills are any comparable to mine. You might be significantly up leveled.

Either you’re not as valuable as you think or you’re severely underpaid. So your options are jump ship or self reflect and grind.

Sure, L4 is a wide band. But assuming you were on the upper end of the band you would still be almost 300K. What kind of ratings have you been getting?

It's not in sf. The base is probably around 150k. Rent for a 2 bedroom is at least 4k with a 1 hour commute.

4k post post tax is like 70% of his take home. Kids are expensive if he also maxes out his 401k.

Depending on his stock vesting schedule, it could make things better. If the stock vests yearly, it really doesn't help 12 months of the year.

    $230k TC?

Instead of asking what should you do to get $500k TC , You should spend some.time and understand what you did in the past to get $230k TC.

    Are you L4?
Are you in Tier 2 city?

There's no reason you couldn't go add 200k+ to your comp with a bit of interview prep and strong competing offers. I would assume you should actually be able to go higher, but I'm assuming there's something about your scope / level of impact that has kept you where you are.

Tldr, prep a lot, interview hard, sell yourself well, negotiate well.

For 9 years I worked at MIT. It was a research engineering position. I had fun but didn’t add anything to my TC. So I guess you are right. I have not had any impact in the tech world. It was in academic field.

Thanks for sharing your honest post which helps to balance the severe TC selection bias we see on Blind. You're not alone. I know plenty of people with similar YOE who have also been severely lowballed and downleveled at G. It's more common than people think. Some points to consider:

    1) I would definitely keep your next gig in CA since the state does not allow disclosure of previous salary. If you move to another state disclosing your current 230K TC will hold you back. At least bump your TC up to market before looking out of state

    2) Being older with more YOE and children I think it's wise of you to consider career stability in addition to just TC. Find the balance.

    3) As already mentioned with some LC prep and your G branding you should be able to lateral over to another company with a significantly higher TC as long as you don't need to disclose your current TC.

Just out of curiousity is your research exp at MIT or Lincoln Labs ?

I would seriously consider starting to interview at some startups. If you are at a same place for a long time your compensation suffers a lot. Consider the AV industry like Cruise, Argo AI etc. They get an erection every time they see Google on your resume. You have google+MIT ---- ball game. Sure that MIT for 9 years did you in.

If you're making 230k and still can't save atleast $500/month, you should see a financial professional to re-assess your spending. I can refer you to someone that can do it for free for you and might be able to give you a solution.

Move out of the area, say Austin or Seattle. Let’s say you are still at google you will still make $230k. Saving becomes much easier now.

18yoe and l4 at G sounds really problematic. If you are really technically strong and got significantly downleveled you should be able to go superb and reach l5 in a year and l6 in another year and half. Otherwise it is nearly impossible to get 500k anywhere, if you don't show a strong trajectory.

Apply in large scale but relatively less prefered but solid companies like Salesforce, slack, Microsoft, splunk, samsung etc. Note in CA, no one can ask your salary, so behave and perform at more senior level. Google's stack raises your technical level so I am sure you will do great at senior level.
Typically a good LMTS at Salesforce can command upto 350- 400K starting numbers and PMTS up to 500K (lot won't and will crib so ignore). There is huge demand to hire Google engineers. By the way IOS engineer will have very limited opportunity in SFDC but you can try.
Note : You will have to balance between work of your interest and interest to company. The later will fetch you more attractive position.

Just apply to other companies and you'll easily double your comp. Throw a dart. You're at Google for crissakes.

As a kickstarter, try Snap, Linkedin, Airbnb, etc
