I'm looking for advice on how I can transition from an IT Director level role for a small regional retail chain to either a PM role at a consumer tech company, or within one of the bigger companies (think Google, Amazon). My undergrad is in MIS and I recently finished my MBA. I can code a little bit. Strong in SQL. Looking for advice on the best route. At this point I would even consider spending my free time strengthening my coding skills and trying for a SWE role. I actually really enjoy it.
The MBA doesn't matter and neither does the MIS degree. You should get your foot in the door at a non-FAANG, transfer to PM over time, and then go to FAANG. The transition you're talking about--IT Director in podunk retail to PM at a tech company--is a pretty difficult proposition but not impossible. You just need to be patient and gradual. Unless you have a referral or know someone at a tech company who can just hire you.
Go PM... Transitioning to SWE is possible, but will be huge waste of your time.

I will definitely take a look at that. Looks like it could be very helpful. Do you recommend working on my development skills and going for a technical role? I spent 3 years on my MBA and I don't want to feel like I wasted it. But I supposed if I go the technical route I would be more qualified to lead a team further down the road.
