How well/poorly are Amazon SDE1s considered these days?

Getting a job there isn’t really hard anymore because the bar is so low, are Amazon SDE1s still considered to be impressive? Or are they the equivalent of HP/Cisco/IBM SDE1s now?

It really does have a low bar for most teams/positions. Not that yhet isn't top talent at Amazon, but since they have been hiring so fast, then have been sucking up a lot of industry trash along with the quality. There are people on my last team who were finally managed out after years, who landed jobs there.

SDE1's are not considered impressive nor were they ever at any company. SDE1 means you haven't done anything worthwhile yet. Jumping through interview hoops is not impressive.

  • Truth:

Getting hired at Amazon is not impressive. Getting promoted at Amazon is. Surviving at Amazon for more than two performance cycles also earns respect as it takes a strong work ethic to survive here.

Given we didn't have quotas last year it might take three years right now to earn respect internally.

You have been supporting stack ranking vehemently all over Blind. Remember you are just one bad performance review cycle away from being put into the bottom bucket yourselves. And that could happen due to any reason like reorgs, bad boss, health issues etc. So I would recommend you to calm down.

Cannot agree more. Weaklings are using Blind as a place for whining.

Actually, I would say “surviving” 10 review cycles in Amazon is pretty hard because if means the person is struggling. To excel for 10 cycles is easier because the person is performing :)

      Weaklings wouldn’t understand.

OP based on your responses on this thread, you lack the intelligence or maturity to understand the point that everyone is making.

So to answer your question, yes. Since people like you are able to get into Amazon, SDE1s at Amazon are considered below the bar

It’s only impressive to other junior engineers. Getting into FB or G at an SDE1 level just means that you practiced a lot at interviewing. It doesn’t mean you’re actually any good at being an SDE.

Amazon SDE1s do not require onsite interviews anymore.

I have heard many fresh grads have to submit group projects done together to be hired.

Amazon has still maintained bar for SDE3+ so props to them.

Load of BS. I had an on-site for entry plus I had a technical round even when I transferred at SDE1 level.

Any stupid can be hired at L4, period.

But if someone is getting promoted to L6 or getting hired at L6 or above, then that's impressive and you can always count on them..

Like other have stated, to most other large companies with SDE1s you’re just a junior level, read:entry level, employee. Outside of the tech world and for lots of smaller companies and outside of Bay Area yeah, you’re hot shit, congratulations
