How's work at Amazon Devices Space?

Specifically roles that are under Amazon's Lab126. How good is work there? Is work life balance better than AWS (on-call) ? What about growth?

Space is sexy. Alexa is every nerd’s girlfriend.

I worked there a few years ago. The WLB was poor and management was like the Wild West - politics were much worse than Microsoft. However, the people were great - friendlier and more than fun than other companies I’d worked. The product challenges were interesting and there was a lot of flexibility for what you wanted to work on. I hear the WLB and management situation is better now as the teams have matured.

How long ago? I recently left and found the WLB was getting worse due to switching to continuous device lunches rather than big fall and spring releases. The politics I felt were getting better but the people were getting miserable which leaked out everywhere else.

Which role in Lab126? If you will be working with manufacturing (China), avoid due to horrible hours, travel etc

^this I feel bad for my old team mates that were flying up to China every couple weeks but still required to attend all of the US time zone meetings.

In Grad school I found a lot of the education was state sponsored (i.e. indians, Afghanistan, etc.). They were all sent to the states to learn and they made up 65% of all grad students in my program. They didn't pay a cent from my understanding. I think there were a few who got jobs on campus to help pay for life expenses. Essentially, other nations care about a good and valuable education.

State sponsored education in India? Sure there are government schools here but only the poorest study there and the quality of teaching in abysmal. Almost no one who goes to a government primary or secondary school ever manages to make it to a semi decent college or university. The kind of indians who had state sponsored education that you would have met are likely grads of the IIT/NIT. The IITs take in about 5-8k students every years while the NITs take in another 10-15k. The quality of teaching at some of the IITs are pretty good and would compare to the top 20-50 engineering schools in America but the quality of teaching at NITs is mostly abysmal. The students succeed because if you are in the top 10k of 2000k students who appeared for the engineering entrance test, you already are very smart and you succeed no matter what. So no Indian government doesn't really care all that much about education, but indian parents do
