Idk why but there seems to be a lot of complaining regarding where people went to school. I graduated math and cs undergrad from CMU. I used to think it would matter, but my boss went to a state school, his boss went to a no name school in India (according to my brown friends), and so on. Money is the new prestige in the real world.
How much did you parents pay for your tuition?
I went to a community college for 2 years and then transferred to the cheapest public college I could find. I have the same position as a colleague my age who went to a private HS and a private university. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.
It matters (1) initially when you graduate and (2) if you care about having an amazing alumni network, like people who to Harvard or Wharton business school do for life. A name may help you get in the door initially, whereas others may have to work harder. But it’s not just about money — it’s about accomplishments. People care less about education and pedigree the further along you are in your career, and more about what you’ve done and whether you’ve proven you can get the job done. Once you have that, education becomes irrelevant.
We don't have many alumni in high positions lol. I'll admit the people I met are among the smartest and I'm glad I know them.
I was referring specifically to places like HBS and Wharton MBA. Those alumni networks are often one of the reasons people get their MBA.
You used to think prestige mattered, but you realized it's about skills and the value you bring to the company.
This. Skill is great, but you have to bring something to table. Schools are great brand names, like your favorite branded toothpaste. But what you have inside matters a lot.
Prestige is money most of the time. Prestige is a sort of meta currency.
I wish. My friends at UIUC, Michigan, and UT all got into Google or LinkedIn as well, some of them have already gotten promoted and beaten us CMU Googlers. Yeah I like that Two Sigma will look at my resume just because I went to SCS, but I honestly wonder if all that stress in high school was worth it now lol
Yeah, but Google and LinkedIn is prestige, also.
People making more money does not necessarily mean they live a happy life. It’s about happiness.
What's CMU?
Who gives a crap about what school you went to unless your like 22. What school you went to was based on your performance in high school, no one cares about that in the real world
Your parents tried to give you as good of a shot at getting ahead in life as they could afford. Other people were able to get ahead without that extra boost. Saying that the boost didn’t matter is the wrong conclusion. Who knows where you would have been without it.
It's always about money. Same reason everyone around here thinks startups are bullshit until the second they have a liquidity event.
Yeah so many friends of mine who couldn't make FANG are trying to convince me their startup offers are good. '.1% is 1 million at a unicorn' lmao
Wait until you get bored out of your mind at FANG. You can’t outrun existential dread at any price.
