So how does that 300K breakdown between taxes, expenses and savings?

Kudos for being supportive but you need to reconsider the opportunity costs here.

Is her small business that isn’t profitable really taking so much time that she can’t also look after the kids? That saves you a lot of money.

WOW so your wife's "business" is actually costing you $2900 a month

Just because spouse doesn’t work does not mean the kids don’t need to go to school. Kids need to interact and play with other kids and can’t be just sitting at home everyday. Hence the 2900 is unavoidable. When y’all have family with kids you’ll realize.

Nobody said they don’t need to go to school, I’m not sure what you’re smoking. School doesn’t cost $2900. If you’re suggesting they need to go to daycare for social interaction before 5 years old, that’s simply an exaggeration.

Parents who use the “when you have kids” argument are also the worst. You have no idea who does or does not have kids. Get off your high horse.

You should spend some of that TC to go travel and gain some perspective.

Since you’re feeling poor you don’t need to spend a ton of money heading to Africa or Argentina..you can just hop a bus to Fresno.

OP doesn’t need to do that, OP just needs to get off their cell phone and look at the people on the streets of SF as they walk into the tower they work in.

What about RSUs/options? Didn't you say you are just 27 with 5 yoe?
      Apr 6
    • Oscar 🐨koala
40k options (and just added 10k after promotion) over 4 years. But these options don’t worth anything unless I can cash out right? Not RSU. I have to exercise :/ so I don’t count options in my tc.

Do you not have a partner that works? It seems to me like you’re still making plenty even considering the high cost of living.

If you include the childcare as part of your living expense (bc it's largely a function of where you live - yes a bit of a stretch) then you are just about cost burdened per the HUD definition. Congrats!

This is the sad reality of the world we live in(people can call Bay Area a bubble but this bubble is our world). I hear ya OP. Just like businesses, individuals have Top Line and Bottom line. It seems like you want to improve on your Bottom Line. Either you can do that by improving your Top Line
    a) get another higher paying job(you are paid well in the 90th percentile for the Bay Area but we have all spent enough time in blind to know there is room there)
    b) other sources of income - stocks/options

    Or, reducing your expenses-
    Buy a house!

    Good luck!
    Apr 5 2
    • Microsoft atad
Are you serious? 120k is the median income in Bay Area. If 300k is making OP feel poor, he/she has issues. Reducing expenses should be the top priority here. There are people in other professions working in Bay Area that make nowhere close to 100k
      Apr 5
    • Google / Product 4pmCoffee
There is a difference between being poor and feeling poor. Being poor is Top Line really low, feeling poor is Bottom Line(Top Line - Expenses) is really low. How do you change that? like I said either increase Top Line or Reduce expenses or both, depending upon what is possible in your individual situation. Simple!(not easy)
