I got a offer with Google but I need to pay back Microsoft... Help?

Google has been my dream company so I decided to interview with them even though I've only been with Microsoft less than a year.

I'll be forfeiting and need to pay back relocation, signing bonus, stocks. All totalling $130k.

Do you think Google will help cover that if I ask? I'm scared to ask. What should I do?

How many more months do you have to work at M$ so you don't owe them anything?

Wrong team buddy. The manager sounds desperate and your work might be very stressful.

Either ask them to pay Microsoft or just wait the time out

Accept the offer, ask for the maximum joining time. Tell them you are within a year and there is financial impact of starting sooner than 3 months and see if they can offset it by covering. Make it clear you really want to start soon as well ( It is a good sign that the hiring manager wants you to start soon. That means they need you, as opposed to going to some team where you won’t learn much since they don’t have the real need ).

Check your MS offer letter again to see if the relo costs and sign on bonuses are prorated if you leave early. In that case what you need to pay back may not be as high as you are thinking.

@Microsoft Sbwv22 I am in a similar situation. I have been in MSFT for a month. I love the team I will be working at Google and definitely want to take it. Did you finish 1 year at MSFT before you moved to Google ?

Do you just not want to pay it, or you *cant* pay it? If the latter, how/why did you spend $130k that wasnt fully vested? I could see a few thousand for relocation, but beyond that doesn't make sense.
Also, what kind of stocks would you need to pay back? You physically can't sell & spend unvested stock as far as I'm aware.

These numbers don't make sense. Just go and double check them. But I would NOT go into Google asking for those numbers. They are going to think you are a rookie.

Don't even bring the unvested stock in the same conversation as "have to pay back Microsoft". You are not paying it back, you are just forfeiting them stocks.
That doesn't mean you should not bring it up at all. Just say you that you would love to start ASAP but it's incurring significant financial costs to you. Mention the relocation and sign-on, and specifically say that you are forfeiting unvested RSUs.

Also, be crystal clear on the numbers and the contract that you have with MSFT. You would lose trust if you give inaccurate/false numbers and they find out the real numbers. Intentionally done or not, you'll always be looked at someone who lied.

Well, after a few years of working for any major company you’ll learn none of them are anyone’s “dream”. But compared to most other industries, we have it so well, and for many people Google is still the goal. What’s your dream company, she wolf?

      $40k - relo (repay)

      $50k - stocks (unvested)

Well google should already be giving u a bonus and stock package so that should offset any loses there. Googled offer could be even better than ur current signing + bonus stock offer... It’s mostly your relocation package that they would need to keep u whole on.

So... If I go and ask them to cover $40k they may be open to it?

Yeah I would ask to cover relocation for sure. I have heard google is pretty good about salary negotiations. If you feel happy about ur total comp, I would at least let them know about the relocation repayment concerns.

You don’t have to start immediately unless it’s worth $40K/mo to work at your dream company. Use as leverage to see if Google will offer more to get you to start earlier

That's not an excuse for such behavior. If you are to run a company, would you like to emply ppl like this? I seriously doubt.

Google offers little difference compared to MS these days. I despise one year jumpers between giants. If I see that on resume, I skip those.

Decency and loyalty can't be bought. But obviously this entitled millennial generation don't give shit about things like these.

Exactly. This is what sign on bonuses are for, covering one time gap in comp and paying back things like claw backs. Tell the recruiter, they'll ask for proof and hopefully cover some or all.

130k seems really high. Relo likely not worth more than 30k, does MS do 100k sign on?

How can relocation cost 40k? Did you move a castle from across the ocean?

The physical move is probably one of the cheapest parts. Lawyer fees for the visa are insane. Then you've got SF rent for a couple of months.

How do you have to give back stocks if you haven't been there a year? First I'd double check what you'd need to repay. Second if you know you're good after three months, like other said work on getting yoir start date to be out. I've had plenty of friends who have done that for Google

Hiring manager always needs you to start yesterday. In reality they have been surviving without you till now, they can do it for couple more months. In the 2nd half of the year, most of the recruitments are done for projects next year.

Just remember OP, the recruiters are measured on you accepting your offer. They'll do what they have to to make sure you start working. Relax and be upfront about your timeline. Get your chunk of stock and avoid the fees. Take a few extra weeks between.

I brought it up with a recruiter from the first conversation. In my case it was tuition reimbursement. Google's offer then included sign in bonus to cover what I owned previous employer.

Most sensible managers will be ok with waiting a few months. It's hard to find a good candidate. The cost of waiting a few months is miniscule compared to the cost of hiring a mediocre candidate and having to live with that for years.
