I hate working for a startup.

I am a senior engineer for a startup and it sucks. All of us are overworked. The pay is good but the executives are assholes and the job is very stressful. Is this normal?

Everywhere sucks man

Yup. True and normal at all sorts of companies. If you're not happy, try to change it or go somewhere you'll be happy

Is this the case with all the startups? I’m considering of exploring startups next

No, startups are fun as hell

I'm thinking this might be a regional issue. Maybe moving to a new state would help.

A few things to look for with startups: Do the executives hire each other’s unqualified spouses? Have the executives been pals for 20 years? Do they go out and party with their “startup family” all of the time? If so, run. Especially on that first question. Nobody wants to carry the weight of a bunch of nepotism hires, on top of the regular stress.

This company has gone through all of these things. Atm the nepotism is gone and the partying has changed.... But the company culture has turned into an atmosphere of backstabbing and blaming instead. Used to be fun at times, now it's like a war zone

Hitachi Vantara Flee4Life Oct 17, 2019

Geez.....the backstabbing is something I’ve seen right around the time the startup is about to be bought/sold, or after a disastrous release. Everyone is jockeying for place in the New World Order or blame that other team. I’m not sure, but that might be even worse. I’d start a job search now, actually. Don’t waste too much life in there. You won’t really get richer, but the execs will.

It’s pretty common, if not normal. You’ve to evaluate whether it’s worth it for you or not. But to think FAANG is going to be any better is a mistake. They’ve their own problems, like work could be boring AF.

There are plenty of real startups out there that aren’t just playhouses for corrupt execs. It’s not a “startup” problem, it’s a “bad company” problem. Check out some others

A bit of a tangent- Startups are really just the modern equivalent of a family business. Startups get funding from VCs, family businesses from bank loans. If the “family” is bad/dysfunctional/corrupt, the business will be, too.

Sounds like a startup lol
