I lost money by Paypal transfer, what to do?

I sent $700 to someone I don't really know over Paypal. He says he never received the money and I have no way of proving he did. When I called Paypal they said that they cannot give me information on whether it's been received. I found that really odd. Although I don't know the person personally, I know him through some connections, he's a grad student and seems decent. It's hard to think that he's lying. Have you seen anything like that? What can I do?

Why the hell did you do that? Let’s do a test, send me $700 and we can see if it works.

I guess QR code is a better solution going forward.

PayPal customer service sucks clearly

Just like a bank transfer. You send to the wrong account and you’re screwed.

It’s ridiculous how little consumer protection there is in the banking sector. I just had to close my fucking checking account because a single fraudulent transaction came through using a demand draft (basically like a check, but without my signature and just a notation that says “authorization on file”.) So, now I have to switch 10+ accounts over to the new account, and, if I forget one, I could end up out money for late fees and interest charges. And, since I have no idea where the perpetrators got my information, it’s entirely possible that I’ll just end up giving it right back to them in the course of switching things over.

Nothing to do, your money is gone.

Call your bank or cc company (whichever was the funding instrument on PayPal) and see if they can help

Screw you, I’m not a grad student

Did you try Ctrl-Z?

I have repeated issues with paypal services. Their customer service reps are usually friendly, but they are rarely able to resolve my problems.

Did the 700 come from your bank or from your PayPal address? If it’s from your bank you might be able to claim the funds never reached where they were supposed to go and the bank will have to investigate.

Seriously.. if PayPal doesn’t have this info, how are they preventing money laundering?

They have the info, but they can't disclose it
