HELP ME FIND A NEW CAREER!

I’m going crazy trying to figure out which career I’d enjoy and be good at. I can list some qualities of mine and I hope the fine people on Blind can help me figure it out.

===Career choices I’ve considered===

Possible roles I’ve been considering and why. High TC and fast career progression is my goal:

-Tech Sales (I’m good with people and I have heard the TC is over $200k if you hit your goals. Can anyone confirm?)

-Management Consulting (M/B/B firms which would require me to get an MBA unfortunately. Good role for bullshitters and people with presentation skills. Cool lifestyle with always changing work. Get to dress nice.

-Investment Banking (By far has the worst WLB but exit opportunities are very good and the money as an Associate is like 300k TC)

-Move to Hollywood and take my swing at acting (I’m a pretty good looking guy, though I realize this doesn’t mean shit. Could try and get a big break just like the new Star Wars cast did. Chances very low.)

-Start a Youtube or twitch channel (really over saturated but the personality may help here)

-Some online marketing business using cloaking to make money

===Personal Strengths and Weaknesses===

Strengths: (more + indicates more skill lol)

++++Very outgoing and good with people; can randomly approach anyone. (My biggest strength. I’m very good at this though I fear this alone won’t get me places.

+++Great at bullshitting and also connecting people to each other. Not trying to be arrogant with this one. Just stating the facts.

+++Funny (does this even count? Lol)

++Good at making simple analogies to complex problems; assuming I understand them.

+Creative (hence I’m always dreaming)

Weaknesses:

——Not good at coding and don’t enjoy it. Feels pointless and frustrating.

——Not driven by roles that are slow paced. I thrive on meritocratic roles that reward you directly based on performance.

——-Don’t enjoy back-office type work; feels empty and meaningless.

===Extras===

Background: (not really too relevant here)

I’m currently an L4 Engineer in Amazon (first job after college with some prior internship experience); it’s a good first stepping stone job but I already know I will strongly dislike coding.

Thanks guys. Feel free to be brutal 😝

      This++

      It sounds like you can be technical to make real decisions. Part of that is interfacing with people and motivating them to give you an informed recommendation.

      They do need to motivate at super political places (Intel).

      Even at my new place, one PM is genuine and nice to everybody. He respects my technical ability even though I am quite young amongst the other engineers. I will go to my limits to make his project successful - even getting cross functional stuff done.

      There is another PM that couldn't give a shit when someone was (admittedly) over-emotional and over-thinking a coworkers death. I will definitely feel ok going home at 5 on his projects. I'll do my job exactly - only what yields credit from my manager

  • Seems like you have absolutely no idea what you want to do. So you’d probably make a great CAREER COACH to help others figure it out.

    Source: I’m really good at giving people career advice/coaching. But I failed to make a living off just this, as I tend to give away all my advice for free, over charging for it.

      If you didn't make a living out of something you are good at then you need to see a career coach too :p

    You sound like a closet PM. Look at Corey Sanders at Microsof - he grew from nothing to VP in 10 years or so and he shares some qualities with your description. He also has insane work ethic from what I hear.

    Forget all the other positions you listed, just immature crazy talk and day dreaming.

      Thank you. I messaged him on LinkedIn and waiting for a reply. Also he started out as a software developer which I wouldn’t enjoy as I original mentioned.

      I’m curious why you consider my other options besides the actor/YouTube/twitch to be immature crazy talk? They are just alternative career choices that aren’t too tough to break into; j just wanted to see if I’d be a good fit.

      Because they require different education, life experiences, and social circles. People who succeed there would have a large head start on you. And because they don’t have a cushy software development career to fall back they’d be a lot more determined and ruthless.

      How does one go about this? Is there a process where someone finds what is lacking in the market? Market research perhaps?

      I have looked into this but a little lost on how to get started. I’ve read some books on entrepreneurship and they were vague.
