I started a program in mentoring college kids. One of them is finishing BS in Chemistry next semester.

He doesn't know what career to pursue or what MS specialty. I'm in finance so I'm short in recommendations here ....Any advice from those close to this field?

Obviously you never mentored anyone. The scope is broader than just career advice. I'd recommend you the experience to broaden your own perspective

Good for you. You seems stormy for a mentor? Relax ...
Homeless are people too even if they dont design cat filters for teens.

Btw. AMEX is a very decent company, it's not faang $$, but it has genuine culture and purpose.

Yes that kid should team up with a man who is a Nobel prize winner in chemistry and has cancer and needs money for his family. They both can make meth and make money.

Food science or the petroleum industry. Kid is going to need many more degrees, MS etc.
His department should be able to help also.

Used to be my major back in the day until I wisely switched to CS.

Very Cool. How did it switch? Right after college or experienced?

I switched during college. I liked Chemistry as a freshman because you got to make colorful solutions and occasionally blow stuff up in the lab.
Then I realized I liked the cool logic of computers way better. So graduated with a CS degree instead.
Come to think of it pharma could be another industry they could get into.

Semiconductors maybe. Guessing breaking in will be hard, so advise networking. Which coincidentally is always correct career advice
