I’ve applied to 200 companies in sf and have only gotten calls back from 4 recruiters. I’ve only made one technical phone screen which I failed. It’s really depressing me. I have working experience with c++ and python. I have confidence I can pick things up on the job and learn new domains quickly. I’ve been working on a neural network compiler. I have 4 years experience and my current(and only) company. Am i an idiot? I’m ready for the roast...
Fox ur resume. Shorten it up
Only for being so hard on yourself that you sound like you are getting depressed (which won’t help). I can think of several recruiters I know who would be interested in a person with 4 years of neural network complier experience.
PM me if you want to connect to them
1. hit leetcode , practice about 200-250 easy/ medium questions 2. Apply to some companies for interview practice (these shouldn’t be your first priority) 3. Practice more leetcode (medium /hard questions) 4. Since you have 4 yoe, design questions are sure to be asked in onsite interviews Ps: reaching out to just recruiters for job Opportunities isn’t the best idea, find people on LinkedIn and talk to them about their exp in that company, understand if you are a good fit and then circle back to the recruiter with a more company/job specific email
Adding to what CA_26 said, start with CTCI and complete all the problems and learn the interview tips that the author provides. You will get lots of insight from CTCI. Then top it up with lots of leetcode. Remember there is a difference between programming and interviewing. Practice on whiteboard/paper than a compiler/text editor. A problem should be considered as solved when you have proved to yourself that the code is efficient, clean, bug free and maintainable. Do some mock interviews. Last but not the least, never let rejections get you down. Most of the SDEs in good companies have got rejected many times before reaching there. You will do great! Good luck!
Dont lose heart. Its probably the resume. There must be something wrong with it. Send it over if you like, I can give you some feedback.
Hit up recruiters directly on LinkedIn, higher chance of them noticing you esp if you’re tech.
Are you local? Or are you trying to move to the Bay area? If you're not local, then it's hard for a company to take a chance with you. It's doable but it'll definitely take a while. Also aim for startups. A lot of them have a hard time hiring.
I’m located in San Jose. But want a job in San Francisco. Local to the Bay Area, but not sf
How is that idiotic? I just checked: in 2018 I have sent 1,352 messages on dating sites. 9 of the messages was replied to. 2 made it to first date. 1 made it to bed. Message to bed conversion rate = 1/1352. Next year I'll send even more messages and bang not one but two chicks, so help me God!
You need write some bot to increase count of sent messages :)
One. Page. Resume. Showcase your contributions to the company, not what your responsibilities were. No one cares about your list of 100 skills, tools, etc that you have listed. DM me your resume if you want more personalized feedback.
Something must be wrong with your resume...I’ve only applied to at most 20 jobs at a time and gotten like call backs from a third of them. You must not be targeting your resume to the job posting. Also try networking that helps, too. I’ve gotten jobs both ways, through applying directly to a company’s career website and through referral.
I guess I have been working on a neural network compiler, but I want to try something new. Maybe backend or distributed systems. I get the high level concepts. How do I target my resume for something I want to do but have no experience in?
It’s not about the project, it’s about your skills, experience with programming languages and frameworks. Put that on your resume...when you get an interview ask them about projects available. If you want distributed systems projects, cloud is a good area. Literally it’s keyword matching...find a job you want and make your resume look like the job posting with the requirements.
