I think clients judge me because I look young.

Have any of you guys who are financial advisor been in a situation where you feel like you are being judged or questioned because you look (physically) inexperienced? How do you combat this situation?

This seriously works. I grew a beard and folks started respecting what I said more and even younger devs look up to me. Only thing is I'm their same age, just look a lot older

Oh yes. Age discrimination is not only for old people, but young people. There are many times where my client/colleagues thing I am “inexperienced” because I look young.

Should see their face when they realized I am much older than them.

Interestingly, some of them are the ones that claim to fight for equality (LGBT, people of color, etc), yet they practice discrimination themselves.

Why would I trust a fin adviser if he doesn’t look like he lived through a full business cycle? I don’t care how many books you read, if you didn’t live through a downturn

So you’ll trust ANY financial advisor because he/she LOOK older?

      Ooooook...

Nope, but I will certainly not trust the one who wasn’t battle tested. You don’t know anything until your portfolio is battered by recession

How do you know he/she is battle tested? By look?

Yep. The last recession ended in 2009, you do the math

So someone that LOOK older is absolutely, positively will have the experience? Any statistic to prove this? Source?

Nope, but younger guy certainly didn’t. If you’re younger than 30 then I won’t let you near my portfolio. You need adult supervision.

Ok, glad you agree that you don’t know if someone is 30 or 20 just by their appearance.

I can guess. I can be wrong and won’t know it. If you look younger than you are then be happy about it. Who cares what people think or how they react. You probably have better health than your peers it can’t be a bad thing

I am not talking about happiness, but about people judging someone simply by their look and think that he/she is “less experienced”.

This applies to pretty much any role. Finance, Engineering, etc.

As for your argument about “recession ended in 2009” and to “do the math”, there are people I know who look like they’re in their 20’s but actually have lived through the Asian financial crisis, dot-com crash and then global financial crisis.

“Battle tested”? You bet they are, but you wouldn’t know because if you meet them, they all look like they’re in their 20’s and you’d think that they need “adult supervision”.

There are also people who are young but sharp, even though they have not lived through the actual recession.

Anyway, I can’t change someone’s mind who discriminate by age, such as yourself, so I’ll leave it at that.

Often, yes. I compensate by learning a lot through others experiences and simplifying our language to clients/prospects. If they ask, I got an answer but not again will I show them how much we know without them asking.

Out of curiosity, why does everyone assume OP is male? There are a LOT of “grow a beard” comments. Women can look young too, and a young looking female is often judged even harsher by clients simply because of gender
